About

Hello!

Welcome to 'Around the Wicket'.

We have created this blog in order for us to chronicle our summers/winters of watching cricket, whether it be international or county. You'll mostly find match reports, series previews and series reviews and fantastically witty puns.

Who are we?

Amy

I'm a second year History student currently trapped on the wrong side of the Pennines. I'm a Yorkshire fan, therefore I know cricketing pain, and I know it well.

My interest in cricket started in 2005, after watching Simon Jones uproot Michael Clarke's leg stump in typically brilliant fashion. It's grown from there on, from watching England collapse to 51 all out, following Yorkshire's yo-yoing county seasons and admiring Daniel Vettori from afar. I have a soft spot for any sort of ridiculous shot that makes Geoff Boycott splutter in outrage, a quick inswinger and any delivery that sends a stump spiralling back down the pitch.

My own blog is Drawing the Stumps, where I am largely angry or sarcastic about cricket. I can usually be found with a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), sat in my PJ's and yelling at the TV or freezing to death at various county grounds.

I'm a second year English Literature with Creative Writing student at Lancaster University. Having lived in the minor cricketing county of Suffolk since I was 5, my first class county of choice is Essex. My inability to drive actually means that it's easier for me to get to Chelmsford than it is for me to go and watch Suffolk play in the Minor Counties Championship. (Please don't get me started on the public transport system of Suffolk.)

I first got into cricket in 2004. I'd been playing Kwik Cricket since I was 5 (I have all the awards with Nasser Hussain's "signature" on it), but had never thought to watch this crazy game I'd been playing for years. So, whilst bored on a weekend break in Thorpeness in Suffolk, my brother turned on the television to Channel 4. I was sat there reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but on the TV screen was the first Test against the West Indies. It was at Lord's and it was that Test match where Rob Key scored a double century. It was the summer England won all seven Tests that they played, whitewashing both New Zealand and the West Indies, and ever since that moment, I've been hooked.

My own blog is called Down at Fine Leg, where in the summer of 2011, a combination of a collection of rubber ducks and being incredibly bored of revision caused me to recreate nearly every single international day's cricket played by England. I missed the ODI series against India due to moving back up to university. I'm likely to be found either sat on an office chair wrapped in a blanket gracefully gawping at a Cricinfo scorecard/various cricket statistics websites with Test Match Special floating past my weary ears or sat bleary eyed at a match, having been forced to get up early due to said public transport system of Suffolk.
